IS GROWING UP OPTIONAL ?

Is Growing Up Optional?

hopscotchforseniorsThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one!” She told me.

After class, we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon, and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up, and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Embarrassed, she leaned forward into the microphone and said, “I’m sorry I’m a little nervous. I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”

As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.

You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is an enormous difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything, I will turn eighty-eight.

Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She finished her speech by courageously singing “The Rose. At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can be. Author unknown

Reflections:

I love this story, especially now as I am maturing. I pray I will always have an attitude of wonder, joy and curiosity in each new day’s activities. No matter what age I am or how I am feeling. And I never want to get weary of meeting new and interesting people, I think this keeps us young. I want to age as graceful as I can and keep them guessing.

We make a Living by what we get,

We make a Life by what we give.

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

If God brings you to it – He will bring you through it.

Thank you for sharing your time with me sweet friend, What do you do to keep a young perspective,

I would love to hear your thoughts. Have a great week, Hugs to all.

Lovingly, Karan

Hospital required regulations

nurse

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for most patients when they’re being discharged. However, this girl working as a student nurse found one elderly gentleman — already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase as his feet — who insisted he didn’t need her help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let the nurse wheel him to the elevator. On the way down, she asked if his wife was meeting him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I think she’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.”

Sleeping with Strangers

Arriving back in my hospital room after surgery, I was enjoying the benefits of morphine, and anti-nausea medications. And nothing could keep me awake for the first two days. However on the third day I was awaken by a miss happy pants at 6:30 am and told the Urology floor of the hospital was overflowing. And because of the crowding problem my room become coed. My next two roommates would be gentlemen!

I felt a little uneasy about the crooked curtain which hung wide open. When I mentioned it to the nurse, she whipped out of her pocket surgical tape to hold it together. I now have a whole new respect for surgical tape, it kept the curtains together my whole hospital stay. They call it is the nurses duct tape, it can fix anything, including broken fingernails. Who knew? I was so thrilled to get a roll when I went home.

In the next few days I learned more about the urinary track of both the female and male anatomy. I’m positive it was more then I needed to know.  It was way to enlightening. Lol. And I have never seen nurses get so excited for their patients when they pass gas or used the restroom. Honestly, the high-fiving and happy dancing around the room was hysterically infectious.  What a delight and blessing to have two caring and encouraging young nurses who brought both laughter and joy to my room every day.

Lying in the hospital and recovering at home I have had time to do some reflecting. When life slows down for me I have better focus and clarity of what is important to me.  I am constantly in awe of God’s caring love in the little love lessons he teaches me daily. I am humbled by the caring hearts of friends, family and others who have faithfully prayed for me, even when I felt down and didn’t know how much I needed them.  God has a wonderful way of letting us know He cares and loves us more than we can even imagine. The Bible says in,

Ephesians 3:20

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us.

God always sees the Big Picture of our lives, and knows just what we need and where I am.  I am not a stranger to Him.  Thank you for letting me share this journey with you, I love you!

Thank you for spending your time with me, I am honored by your friendship and compassion, Hugs

Interviewing God

Interviewing God

interview 2

“So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time” I said.

God smiled. “My time is eternity and it is enough for me.” “What questions do you have in mind for me?”

“What surprises you most about human kind?”

God answered…
“That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again.”

“That they lose their health to make money… and then lose their money to restore their health.”

“That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, and they live in neither
the present nor the future.”

“That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.”

God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while.

holding-hands (1)

And then I asked…

“As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?”

“To learn that true happiness is not to achieve their goals but to learn to be satisfied with what they already have achieved.

“To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved.”

“To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.”

“To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.”

“To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open deep wounds in those they love,
and it can take many years to heal them.”

“To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most,
but is one who needs the least.”

photo-1422544834386-d121ef7c6ea8

“To learn there are people who love them dearly,
but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings.”

“To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently.”

“To learn that it is not enough that they forgive each other, but they must also forgive themselves.”

“To learn that they can never do something extraordinary for me to love them; I simply do.

“Thank you for your time,” I said humbly.

“Is there anything else you would like your children to know?”

God smiled and said,
“Just know that I am here… always.”

Discussion Question:  If you could ask God one question, what would it be?

I Am a Soldier

The Soldiers Heart

051

What do you want me to send you?  “Anything you need tell me and I’ll send it.”  I told my son-in-law, who was on the phone from the Middle East.  “Baby food” he replied without hesitation.  Now that is not the answer you would expect to hear from an American soldier serving his country so far away.  Or would you?

All over the world, our soldiers are not only sacrificing, but also serving honorably in acts of kindness and compassion.  They are showing people a better way of life.

Some people say we fight for oil, money, and power.  In our country, we are split with various opinions on how our government and military should be run, and how things should be done in countries that are far away and remote from our everyday lives.  Have we forgotten what life would be like for us if this war were fought here in America?

However, something happens when our soldiers leave that will outlast the fear, killings, and the submission that insurgents demand of their people. American soldiers give them something better, kindness instead of selfishness, hope instead of despair, and laughter instead of sorrow.

The enemy may beat, blow-up, and torture people to push their evil agenda, but those people have seen something else.  When our soldiers were out on patrols, or on their days off they give away their food, water, candy, and friendship.  Some even spent their time off helping the people to rebuild their lives, homes, and schools.  These acts of kindness, hope, and compassion are qualities that people of the Middle East will not soon forget!

May God bless the men and women of the military who serve quietly, unselfishly, giving their time and extras to bringing a better life for someone else?  To allow the people to see what real freedom looks like.

Every Country, even our own has had to pay a large price for freedom, and our Middle East friends are learning what that cost is with their own suffering.  Freedom has a high price, but once you have had a taste of freedom you cannot stop until you have it for yourself, your families, and your country.  As they are finding out now for themselves.

In addition, yes, it means our soldiers will continue writing letters for sponsors on their time off, asking people to help in different ways.  Trying to find “baby food” for the littlest children and letting their parents know that someone does care their needs.

Aesop said many years ago, “No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted”

This is the American spirit, which is the heart and soul of our soldiers, and the people of in these countries will not be able to ever forget them.©

Caller ID ~ Do You Know Who’s Calling?

Caller ID

On a Saturday night several weeks ago, this pastor was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home. It was about 10:00 PM, but his wife didn’t
answer the phone. The pastor let it ring many times. He thought it was odd that she didn’t answer, but decided to wrap up a pink phonefew things and try again in a few minutes.

When he tried again she answered right away. He
asked her why she hadn’t answered before, and she said that it hadn’t rung at their house. They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he’d used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he’d called on Saturday night.

The pastor couldn’t figure out what the man was talking about. Then the man said“It rang and rang, but I didn’t answer.” The pastor remembered the mishap and apologized for disturbing him, explaining that he’d intended to call his wife.

The man said, “That’s OK. Let me tell you my story. You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, ‘God if you’re there, and you don’t want me to do this, give me a sign now.’

At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, ‘Almighty God’. I was afraid to answer!” The reason why it showed on the man’s caller ID that the call came from “Almighty God” is because the church that the pastor attends is called Almighty God Tabernacle!  Author unknown

Dear Friends

I wanted to share with you dear friends what has been happening in my life for the last few months.  In February I was diagnosed with Cancer after a mass was found in my kidney. I have seen doctors, one specialist and had many tests as usually happens in these circumstances.   I would ask you to remember me at this time of waiting and decisions for the right result. I am now in waiting mode, to be honest I do not do waiting well.

They decided I need to have a partial kidney surgery, but I am waiting now to see another specialist in Calgary, Alberta.  He specializes in a surgery which is less invasive, with great results. It is a called a Robotic daVinci Partial Nephrectomy for Kidney Cancer.  I am praying that he will consider me as a good candidate for this surgery. Medicare in Canada is a little different, so again I have found myself waiting.

Isn’t it amazing how God works in our lives! This morning while I was having a quiet time and reflecting on these last few month, I found great comfort in:

Philippians 4: 6 & 7 (The Message)

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your time with me. I will keep you posted on my process, and if you need me to pray for you too, I would count it a privilege, just drop me a note. Hugs

Have a great week!  Joyfully Sharing,

Lovingly, Karan
